A creative approach to choosing lottery numbers has paid off for a Hyattsville man, who won $50,000 in the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 drawing on June 26.

The Prince George’s County resident, a retired retail worker and avid fisherman, selects his lottery numbers based on digits from other drivers’ license plates, particularly noting those involved in accidents or speeding past him.

The winning number, 20533, brought him his recent windfall during the midday drawing. This isn’t the first time the number has been lucky; in 2023, it earned him $5,000 in a Pick 4 drawing after he adapted it to 2053.

“I was happy and excited when my five digits hit,” he shared, reflecting on his win.

The lucky grandfather plans to use his winnings to start a savings account for his grandchild, contributing to his family’s future.

The winning ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven on 2310 Varnum Street in Mt. Rainier, which will also receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
