Belated Christmas celebration leads to $150,000 lottery prize

A lucky woman from Avon named Laura Miller won a whopping sum of $150,000 playing North Carolina Education Lottery’s $5 Cashword Multiplier ticket game.

The winning ticket was sold at Askins Creek Store on N.C. Highway 12 in Avon. The store will receive a bonus of $1,500 for selling the winning scratch-Off ticket.

“When I was scratching I was like, ‘I’m pretty sure I did this wrong,’” she said. “I guess I was just shocked.”

The winner recently claimed her winning amount from the lottery headquarters and took home $106,876 after state and federal taxes.

She plans to use her winnings to pay off her truck and save the rest for future uses.

North Carolina has one of the United States' youngest lottery systems, having been enacted in 2005.

Cashword Multiplier debuted in August with six $150,000 prizes. Two $150,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
