New Bedford mom wins $1M lottery prize; wants to use cash for daughter’s college

A woman from New Bedford named Edna Soares won Massachusetts State Lottery’s “Emeralds 50X” scratch ticket worth $1 million.

The winning ticket was sold at the Golden Food Mart in Fall River. The ticket distributor will get a bonus of $10,000 for selling the winning scratch-Off ticket.

The winner recently claimed her winning amount from the lottery headquarters and took home $650,000 after state and federal taxes.

She wants to use her $1 million for both herself and her family. She plans to pay for her daughter’s college, pay off her own college loans, and to purchase a truck for her dad.

As with most U.S. lotteries, the Bay State's lottery games require players to be at least 18 years old.

Drawings are broadcast on WBZ-TV (channel 4) the CBS-station in the Boston television market.

For instant tickets, the claim period usually ends 1 year after the game's end-of-sale date. For draw games, like Powerball, Mega Millions, Megabucks Doubler and Mass Cash, the claim period lasts for one year after the draw.
