NBA Lottery Reform Makes Life Harder for Warriors After Curry Era

The NBA just made rebuilding a whole lot tougher — and the Golden State Warriors could feel the impact more than most teams once Stephen Curry eventually calls it a career.

A new draft lottery system will officially begin for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 NBA Drafts, and it completely changes how teams chase top picks. Instead of only the first four selections being decided by lottery balls, all 16 lottery picks will now be determined that way.

Here’s what makes it even crazier:

  • The bottom three teams only get two pingpong balls each
  • Teams ranked No. 4 through No. 10 get three balls
  • Play-in losers can also enter the mix
  • A team with the fourth-worst record could still end up picking 16th

That’s bad news for franchises hoping to stack elite young talent during a rebuild.

For Golden State, the timing couldn’t be worse. The Warriors were always expected to rely heavily on future draft picks once the Steph Curry era ends. But under the new rules, building through multiple top-five selections becomes nearly impossible.

The NBA also added another huge restriction:

  • Teams can’t land the No. 1 pick in back-to-back years
  • Teams can’t pick in the top five for three straight drafts

That completely shuts down the kind of rebuild the San Antonio Spurs just pulled off with Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper in consecutive years.

Golden State also faces another challenge: they don’t have many young players with major trade value. Their best path back to contention likely involved packaging future first-round picks for another superstar.

Imagine a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade package built around future Warriors picks. Before these changes, rival teams could dream about landing several top-five selections if Golden State collapsed after Curry retired. Now? Those picks suddenly look far less valuable.

Even if the Warriors struggle for multiple seasons, lottery luck could still push those selections outside the top 10.

Of course, rebuilding quickly is still possible. Teams can always strike gold outside the top five. But the margin for error just became much smaller.

One thing is clear: the NBA’s new lottery system just made life harder for teams entering a rebuild — and the Warriors may be one of the biggest losers of the change.
