Maryland Grandmother Wins $50,000 Pick 5 Prize for the Second Time

Good karma—and good numbers—paid off big for a Germantown grandmother.

A retired postal worker has won another $50,000 Pick 5 prize, marking her second $50,000 win of the year. Her latest win came shortly after she made sure to pay at an honor-system farm stand when others were taking items without leaving money.

The grandmother regularly plays Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5. She gives her grandson money every Tuesday to purchase her weekly tickets.

One of those tickets was a $14 Pick 5 ticket covering drawings from August 18 through August 25. She used her favorite numbers: 1-2-9-1-2.

On August 23, those numbers hit straight.

But she didn't realize she'd won until later that night.

Earlier that day, she and her grandson stopped at a roadside farm stand after running errands. Customers were expected to take what they needed and leave payment in a box. She noticed some people were taking items without paying.

She made sure to do the right thing, even though it took her a moment to locate the payment box.

Hours later, she checked her lottery tickets and recognized the winning numbers.

“Oh my goodness, I hit the five-digit again,” she recalled.

Her grandson immediately called it karma.

“We paid for our items at the farmer’s stand,” he said, joking that her good deed had come back around.

Her Second $50,000 Win

  • Latest prize: $50,000
  • Previous Pick 5 win: $50,000
  • Total winnings this year: $100,000
  • Winning numbers: 1-2-9-1-2

She claimed her latest prize on September 8. She plans to use some of the money for home renovations, put some into savings, and share a portion with her grandson.

The winning ticket was purchased at Town Center Sunoco on Germantown Road, which will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

For the grandmother, however, the biggest reward wasn't necessarily the money.

“It’s not about the money,” she said. “It’s about the victory.”
