Canadian Grandfather Wins $44 Million After Buying a $20 Lottery Ticket

A routine stop for a $20 lottery ticket turned into a life-changing moment for Doug Putland, a grandfather from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Putland has bought lottery tickets for years, often while heading to Saskatchewan Roughriders games. On one game day, he stopped at a gas station wearing his Roughriders gear and green beard when he noticed a $20 bill in his pocket.

“If I hadn’t had that $20 in my pocket, I never would have bought the ticket!”

After the August 8 Lotto 6/49 draw, Putland checked his ticket and initially struggled to understand the amount on it.

• First, he thought he had won $44,000.
• Then he realized it was $440,000.
• Finally, the cashier helped him see the truth: $44 million!

The shock hit hard. Putland said he put his hand over his heart as the reality sank in. His wife, who was waiting in the car, reportedly went pale when he shared the incredible news.

Now a multimillionaire, Putland says his family comes first. He plans to help his children and contribute toward his grandchildren’s education, with his wife, a former teacher, helping guide those plans.

He also wants to honor his late cousin, whom he called his best friend, by helping fix baseball fields.

And there’s already been one big purchase: a brand-new truck. Beyond that, Putland is looking forward to traveling, spending time with loved ones, and creating plenty of new family memories.
