California Powerball
As the most populous state in the US, California is also one of the largest players in Powerball. The powerball produces nearly $1 billion each year for public education and is the only state lottery to pari-mutually pay all of its rewards. This implies that California seems to be the only country not offering Power Play. Please see the numbers below for California Powerball.
How to Play CA Powerball
California is the only country not allowing players to add Power Play to their tickets. This is because the pari-mutual reward system is incompatible. Multiplying the reward by a predetermined value, like Power Play does, implies that the ultimate prize worth no longer depends on the number of ticket sales and category winners. Until California pays out the rewards on a pari-mutuel basis, participants in the state will not get the Power Play.
Rules to Play Powerball in California
Powerball is played like any other state in California, with the following exceptions. See the How to Play page for more information on entering Powerball drawings.
- You must be 18 years old or older to play.
- You may play in advance up to 10 draws.
- Prices are determined on a pari-mutuel basis, which means they depend on the number of tickets sold and winners. In other countries, they may vary from the awards mentioned.
- Power Play in California is not available.
- You won't have to pay state taxes on your profits, but you still have to pay federal tax.
- The California Lottery enables group play and claims of multiple ownership of up to 100 participants.

How can I claim rewards in California?
Awards valued up to $599 may be requested from any registered California lottery store. You must complete a California Lottery claim form for wins above this amount and transfer it to one of the district offices below. Office hours are, excepting holidays, from Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm Pacific time.
Alternatively, via mail, you may claim any value rewards. You must fill out a claim form and submit it with your winning ticket to the following address: Lottery of California, 730 North 10th Street, Sacramento, CA 95811.
The California Lottery awards may take up to six weeks to process.
A Lottery Pool Claim
When multi-owner claims are paid (for example a lottery pool), the California Lottery pays each requester individually if the prize is 1 million dollars or more. If it is less than that, the whole money will be given to one member, who will then be required to arrange for the payout to the other members of the group.
Period of claim
Within a year of the winning draw the Powerball Jackpot awards have to be claimed and all other awards must be claimed within 180 days. The winning ticket and the required claim form must be received by that date by the California Lottery or mailed by email. Public education is given prize money that is not claimed at this time.
