An individual from Western Australia has won the whole $80 million division one Powerball jackpot, making it the state's largest-ever lottery victory.

Thursday night's drawing saw an estimated one in four Australians purchase a ticket.

The previous record for the state of Washington was $50 million, set in 2015.

Acting Lotterywest CEO Jeremy Hubble was thrilled to be able to congratulate a Western Australian player on such a significant victory.

"This extraordinary outcome has re-written the history books for WA Lotto tonight," he added.

There will be a total of 64 division one champions in the state in 2021 as a result of this triumph.

Another 311,246 winners from various divisions in WA were drawn on Thursday, including one division two winner who would get $89,207 in addition to six other winners from all throughout the nation, according to the results.

One of the most expensive lottery tickets ever sold in Australia was sold to a Sydney nurse for $107 million in 2019.

Three additional Australians have recently won over $80 million playing the lotto: a New South Wales man earned $96 million in the same year, a Melbourne cleaner won $80 million earlier this year, and a Victorian couple will win over $80 million in the year 2020.
