Prince Edward Island has officially joined the rest of Atlantic Canada by allowing residents to access legal online casino games, including virtual slots and online poker. While the move is designed to provide a safer, regulated gaming experience, experts warn it could also lead to a rise in gambling-related problems.

Previously, Islanders were limited to lottery products and a handful of online games through the Atlantic Lottery. Now, anyone with a P.E.I. address or phone number can play a wider selection of casino-style games from their computer or smartphone.

However, gambling researcher Nigel Turner says that while regulated platforms provide better consumer protections—such as reliable payouts—they also make gambling more accessible. As access becomes easier, more people are likely to participate, increasing the chances that some will develop unhealthy gambling habits.

Turner noted that although most players gamble responsibly, a significant share of gambling revenue often comes from individuals who struggle to control their spending. He emphasized that casino games, particularly slot machines, remain among the highest-risk forms of gambling because players can place bets every few seconds.

Another growing concern is live sports betting. Instead of waiting until a game ends, bettors can now make continuous "micro bets" throughout the event, creating a rapid betting cycle that experts say closely resembles slot machine gameplay.

To reduce potential harm, Turner believes governments and gaming operators should strengthen responsible gambling measures, including:
