A Lorain County father of nine got an unexpected financial boost after buying a lottery scratch-off while walking to work.
HP told the Ohio Lottery that he had been walking for about two weeks because his car was having trouble. During one of those walks, he stopped at Daily Mart on Oberlin Avenue in Lorain and picked up a $30 $2 Million Cashword scratch-off.
He started scratching the ticket as he continued down the street—and the wins quickly added up:
- $10,000 from the Quick Win Bonus box
- $30,000 for finding three Bonus Words
- $10,000 for matching 12 words across the two puzzles
That gave HP a total prize of $50,000.
After mandatory state and federal tax withholdings of 26.75%, he is expected to take home $26,625.
The win brought an emotional moment for his family. According to the Ohio Lottery, everyone started crying when HP shared the news.
His plans are practical: pay off his car once repairs are finished and invest whatever remains.
The $2 Million Cashword is a $30 Ohio Lottery Scratch-Off game. Its top prize is advertised as $80,000 per year for 25 years. As of August 28, 2026, one top prize was still available.
