North Carolina Couple Doubles Their Powerball Win to $100K

A Hendersonville couple got the surprise of a lifetime after a Powerball ticket turned into a $100,000 prize. Michael King says he always plays the same set of numbers—birthdays, anniversaries, and other meaningful dates.

“I have played the same numbers forever,” King told the North Carolina Education Lottery. “It’s a combination of me and my wife’s birthdays and when we got married.”

King used those lucky numbers for the Sept. 27 Powerball drawing and matched four numbers plus the Powerball. Because he added the Power Play option, his $50,000 prize doubled to $100,000.

“I told my wife, ‘I think we won the lottery,’” he said. “She was in shock and awe. We just sat there for a few hours staring at each other.” After taxes, the couple took home $71,757.

Hendersonville sits about 105 miles west of Charlotte, but now it’s home to some serious lottery excitement.

Powerball Basics
To hit the jackpot, players must match all five white balls plus the red Powerball. The odds? A staggering 1 in 292,201,338. Tickets are sold in 45 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with drawings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. ET. Tickets can even be bought the day of the drawing, depending on the state.

Play Responsibly
