How does Mega Millions work?
A Mega Millions ticket now costs $5, with a built-in multiplier that can increase non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times.
Players choose five numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball from 1 to 24. A Quick Pick option is also available for randomly generated numbers.
You don't have to be a U.S. citizen or live in the state where you purchase your ticket to play.
How many numbers do you need to match?
Matching just the Mega Ball can win a prize of at least $10. Matching all five white balls earns a major prize, with the multiplier determining the final payout outside California.
Mega Millions is available in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah do not offer the game.
Tickets are commonly sold at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores, while some locations also offer online lottery purchasing through approved services.
What are the odds of winning?
The jackpot odds are a staggering 1 in 290,472,336, so winning big remains a long shot. Still, the latest New Jersey ticket shows that a massive prize can land when the numbers line up.
