New York Lottery Awards $1M Prize During Erie Canal Celebration

A lucky man from Chenango County is officially $1 million richer — and he’s still soaking it all in.

Steven Lamphere of New Berlin scored one of the top prizes in the $1,000,000 Million Dollar Raffle, a special drawing held October 26, 2025, to celebrate the Erie Canal’s 200th anniversary. Out of thousands of entries, just 15 people were picked to win the seven-figure prize — and Lamphere was one of them.

Instead of taking payments over time, he chose the lump-sum option, walking away with $651,006 after taxes.

Here’s what we know:

  • ? Top Prize: $1,000,000

  • ? Lump Sum Taken: $651,006 after required withholdings

  • ?? Winning Ticket Bought At: Mirabito (63 South Main Street)

  • ? New Berlin is about 50 miles southeast of Syracuse

The raffle was part of a special promotion tied to the historic Erie Canal bicentennial, making the win even more memorable.

Meanwhile, the New York Lottery continues to make a major impact statewide. In fiscal year 2024–2025, it contributed $3.6 billion to support public schools across New York — making it the largest and most profitable lottery in North America.

Officials also remind players that help is available for anyone facing gambling-related challenges through the state’s confidential support services.
