Michigan Lottery Tops $1 Billion for Schools for Seventh Straight Year
For the seventh straight year, the Michigan Lottery delivered over $1 billion to the state’s School Aid Fund, pushing its lifetime contribution past $30 billion since launching in 1972. That’s real money going straight into public education.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the funding helps strengthen schools at every level, from pre-K to high school seniors, while backing priorities like:
-
Record per-student funding topping $10,000
-
Free breakfast and lunch for all students, saving families nearly $1,000 per child each year
-
Major investments in early reading programs
The streak is impressive. Over the last seven fiscal years alone, Lottery contributions have totaled nearly $8.7 billion, making it one of the most reliable funding sources for Michigan schools.
The impact doesn’t stop with education. Local businesses are cashing in too.

Retailers earned more than $330 million in commissions in 2025

Acting Lottery Commissioner Joe Froehlich called the milestone a point of pride, highlighting the Lottery’s dual role in supporting both public education and local businesses.
