Travis Chesser, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Michigan, has been recognized with the Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

Chesser received a plaque, a $1,500 cash prize, and a $500 grant for his classroom, school, or school district.

He is also in the running for Educator of the Year, which includes a $10,000 cash prize. Chesser's love of history and former teacher inspired him to become an educator, and his engaging lessons, including role-playing games, have captured the interest of his students.

Colleagues praise Chesser for his dedication to his students and his supportive nature.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to recognize outstanding public-school educators across the state during the school year.
