Maryland Lottery Winner Surprised by $100K Prize

A Maryland man’s careful approach to buying lottery tickets just paid off big.

The Goldsboro resident, an avid fisherman, spends time researching scratch-offs online to see which games still have prizes left. That’s how he spotted the $100,000 Cash game, according to Maryland Lottery officials.

When he stopped by a gas station in Centreville to buy a ticket, the store owner recommended the same game. “I thought I was one of the few retailers still carrying it,” the man said. “Maybe a big winner could be in my store.”

He picked up a $30 ticket along with two others—and luck was clearly on his side. “The first two I scratched, I got my money back,” he said. “The third one? $100,000. I was dumbfounded.”

The winner admitted he’d “never seen that many zeroes on a scratch-off prize ever.”

Plans for the winnings? He’s already thinking about a fishing trip and a vacation with his mom—and, of course, tackling some debt along the way.

Goldsboro, for context, sits in eastern Maryland near the Delaware border.
