Multi-million win for Markham caregiver in lottery draw

A caregiver from Markham is now a multi-millionaire after winning the $60 million Lotto Max grand prize.

Like all lottery winners hoping to one day win big, Lai Ching Yau was still in disbelief when she first found out she had won the jackpot from the Jan. 17 draw.

“My body went numb, and my mind went blank.

I couldn’t think or feel anything,” Yau said according to a press release from the OLG.

“I needed my family to help make sure it was real,” Yau said she knew she needed her family’s help and sent them a screenshot of the win on the OLG app.

Her family confirmed she actually won and told Yau to sign her ticket, but she had difficulty doing so because of the shock of the win.

“My hands were shaking so much I couldn’t hold the pen,” said Yau. Her shock continued when she went to the store to validate her ticket.

“I was so shocked in the store that I left before I could even finish validating the ticket.

The clerk had to flag me down through the window,” she said. Yau said her family “cried happy tears” when she told them about the win in person.

She plans to take her family out to a “nice dinner” to discuss plans on how to use the winnings, but she is looking to go on a vacation and even buy a new home.
