‘Would you split it?’ I won $1.2 million on the lottery but I’m only getting half – now I’m taking my nephew to court

In Nova Scotia, Canada, what should have been a joyous family affair turned into a bitter dispute when a $1.2 million lottery win became the center of a legal battle.

The winners, Tyrone MacInnis and his aunt Barbara Reddick, were initially set to split the winnings, each receiving $420,629 after their names appeared on the winning ticket.

However, tension arose when Reddick claimed, "It was my ticket. I bought the ticket and now he's trying to lie and say I said split." This dramatic moment was captured in a viral TikTok using a clip from the Canadian Broadcasting Company.

With MacInnis's name and phone number on the ticket as the contact, a legal battle ensued. Reddick vowed to take MacInnis to court, expressing her dissatisfaction at the winning ceremony.

Ultimately, a settlement was reached without going before a judge, bringing the matter to a close. Under the agreement reached in September 2018, MacInnis received $255,404, while Reddick took home a larger portion of the jackpot with $636,617. The dispute serves as a cautionary tale about the complexities that can arise from unexpected windfalls, even within close-knit families.
