$1 million California Lottery winner strikes gold at South Bay supermarket

In a stroke of luck, a customer at Vallarta Supermarket in National City, California, won a $1 million prize on a Winter Riches Scratchers ticket.

The California Lottery announced that the supermarket was one of five locations where Scratchers players took home a combined $7 million.

The supermarket chain has had previous luck with lottery winners, with a store in Whittier selling a $5 million Scratchers ticket last year.

The increased traffic from hopeful customers looking to purchase winning tickets has been a boost for Vallarta Supermarkets, according to the Director of Marketing, Lizette Gomez.

The California Lottery is a state-run lottery system that was established in 1984 through a voter initiative known as Proposition 37. Its purpose is to provide funding for public education in California. Since its inception, the California Lottery has raised more than $37 billion for education.
