From Skeptic to Winner: First-Time Lottery Player Hits $50K

Beginner’s Luck Strikes Maryland Man with $50,000 Lottery Win

April 8 (UPI) — A Maryland man’s first-ever scratch-off ticket turned into a $50,000 surprise, proving beginner’s luck is real.

The Cantonsville resident, long a lottery skeptic, changed his mind after seeing another customer at the Liberty Shell station in Milford Mill cash a $400 prize. Inspired, he used $5—given to him by that winner—to buy a ticket for his wife, who regularly plays the lottery.

The couple chose a $5 Mosaic Money ticket and scratched it off together after dinner. To their amazement, it was a $50,000 winner.

Excited but practical, the couple said they plan to use the winnings as a down payment on a new home. The man called the win a “miracle blessing” and joked that he won’t be buying any more tickets.

Quick Highlights:

  • First-time scratch-off purchase nets $50,000
  • Sparked by seeing a $400 prize at local station
  • Winnings earmarked for a new home down payment
